Ambassador Stories: Mark Fraser

The Video Games Ambassadors is shining a spotlight on the remarkable ambassadors in our network. This time, we speak with Mark Fraser, founder of Aero Astro Arts Ltd. and a visionary in the gaming industry. Mark shares his incredible journey from a young game developer to a leader blending aerospace engineering and game design.

In this conversation with Mark, we uncover not just an innovative game creator but a passionate mentor dedicated to inspiring the next generation of game developers. His commitment to both his craft and community-building shines through, making him a trailblazer in the evolving landscape of the gaming industry.

Can you tell us a bit about where you're from, your education, and the things that make you who you are?

“I was born and raised in South West London. My journey has always blended academic pursuits with a passion for adventure. I studied Aerospace Engineering with Astronautics and Space Technology at Kingston University. I’m also continuously learning through various courses at the Game Institute, FxPhD, and CGMA. My identity is a fusion of engineer, artist, explorer, and innovator. I love flying and practicing Shaolin martial arts, which teach me discipline and resilience. I have fond memories of camping as an army cadet and later teaching fieldcraft to young people as an instructor.”

Wow, Aerospace engineering with Astronautics and Space Technology, that’s not a field you hear about often. How did you end up in the games industry?

“My career in game development began at 15 with Flash ActionScript games. By 17, I was a freelance character artist for a startup in the US. While studying Aerospace Engineering, I founded Aero Astro Arts Ltd. in 2007. What started as a small outsourcing firm has evolved into an indie game publisher aiming to leave a mark on Steam, console, and mobile platforms. My journey has always been about blending engineering principles with artistic creativity in game design.”

“As a technical generalist, I have developed a broad spectrum of skills, from game design to concept art, character and environment modelling, level design, UI, real-time VFX, animation, and programming. This multidisciplinary approach allows me to lead and collaborate effectively with specialised teams, ensuring a cohesive and immersive experience for the player.”

Why did you join the Video Games Ambassadors?

“My motivation is rooted in my own experiences and a firm belief in the power of mentorship. My journey started many years ago when I volunteered with 12-19 year olds in the Army Cadet Force. Understanding the profound impact that guidance and support at a young age can have, I am committed to nurturing the next generation of game developers.”

How is it going so far? Any standout moments or experiences as a VGA that you'd like to share?

“Becoming A Video Games Ambassador has been filled with incredible experiences and meaningful contributions. Since stepping into this role almost a year ago, I have supported portfolio reviews at WASD and hosted a workshop on 3D Game Art at the Staffordshire University.

Attending the 'Games in the City' event was also a great experience. I got to discuss new trends and connect with other professionals in the industry. Overall, my experience as a VGA has been a journey of personal growth, learning, and contributing to the industry I love.”

Here’s a fun question: If you could have any in-game item become a reality, what would you choose?

“If I could bring any in-game item to reality, it would be the Enterprise from Star Trek Online. This choice reflects my ambitious nature and deep-rooted fascination with space. The Enterprise symbolises exploration, innovation, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible—values that resonate strongly with me both as a game developer and aerospace enthusiast.”

Before we wrap up, anything else you'd like to share with the network? Any shoutouts, ongoing projects, or upcoming events?

“There are exciting developments on the horizon that I'm thrilled to share. First, let’s talk about our upcoming Steam titles. Each game promises to offer a unique and engaging experience:

🎮 Flight of the Majestic: Imagine the classic arcade feel of R-Type reimagined with modern sensibilities. This title is a homage to the genre, designed to captivate both nostalgic players and newcomers.

🎮 Fate of the Gods: This Hack n’ Slash RPG is an epic adventure through myth and legend. Players will immerse themselves in a world of gods and heroes, forging their path in a narrative-rich experience.

🎮 Noble Order: Set in a stylised medieval setting, a blend of MOBA elements with RTS gameplay to create a strategic and dynamic experience that challenges players to think tactically in real-time.

🎮 After the Swarm: Our flagship sci-fi post-apocalyptic title, featuring a blend of MOBA elements with RTS gameplay for Multiplayer and an exciting episodic RTS experience for single player missions which will span many seasons.

🎮 Neo Tokyo Patrol: A top-down cyberpunk open-world cop game that immerses players in a futuristic city teeming with life and challenges.

🎮 The Street Entrepreneur: A game developed in collaboration with the charity Urban MBA, teaching kids entrepreneurial skills through gameplay.

But that's not all. I'm also stepping into the realm of authorship with Packt Publishing. I'm currently writing a book titled 'Unreal Engine 5 Mobile Game Development'. This project is particularly close to my heart, as it represents a fusion of my knowledge and experience in game development. Alongside the book, I will be releasing a series of mobile games designed for educational purposes. These games will serve as practical companions to the book, offering hands-on learning experiences in mobile game development with Unreal Engine 5.

Additionally, I'm currently participating in three Business Accelerator programmes: Foundervine Early Stage Accelerator, Game Changer, and Barclays Funding Readiness Programme. These programmes are helping me refine my business acumen and prepare for future growth.”
